Werribee Suburb Profile

Where is Werribee?

Werribee is in the City of Wyndham, around 32 kilometres south-west of the Melbourne CBD on the M1 Princes Highway. It is the largest city between Melbourne and Geelong and is the base for the Wyndham Shire, which it is a part of. Werribee is on the metropolitan train system and commuters can access the city in about 45 minutes from Werribee train station, on the Werribee line. There is also a great local bus network connecting Werribee with the region. Werribee is somewhat of a hub for neighbouring suburbs including Wyndham Vale, Tarneit, Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook.

Living in Werribee

Werribee is a popular place to live with some of Victoria’s most beloved tourist attractions at its doorstep. The local population is around 41,000 and at least half of the population are in young families. Werribee’s Watton Street is a lively central shopping precinct in the centre of town, with major supermarkets and retailers and there are also a number of shopping centres local to Werribee, including Werribee Village Shopping Centre and Pacific Werribee.

There are excellent health care facilities with the Werribee Mercy, the Royal Children’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Private servicing many towns in the Wyndham Shire. The Wyndham Private Medical Centre is home to a number of general, allied and mental health services as well as specialists and a pathology unit.

Werribee offers a great range of educational options for growing families with more than a dozen primary schools, including St Andrew’s Catholic School, Manorvale Primary School and Thomas Chirnside Primary School. There are about 5 secondary schools in Werribee, including Wyndham Central College and MacKillop Catholic College and a number of tertiary institutions have campuses in the satellite city, including Victoria University and the University of Melbourne.
Werribee has become known for its solid investment potential in recent years and though house prices are slightly higher than in neighbouring suburbs, the Werribee real estate scene still offers some good opportunities for first home buyers and young families, with many established family homes turning over regularly in the market. For those more interested in renting houses in Werribee, the rental market is also good with a solid and diverse offering of interesting properties to suit anyone in the suburb’s demographic – from retirees to students, families to young professionals.

Things to See and Do in Werribee

Much of the local lifestyle is focused on the natural environment with the Werribee River running through the centre of the town. Locals love to head to the Riverbend Historical Park for a BBQ, a picnic or some canoeing and there are numerous walks in the area for locals to keep fit. About 10 kilometres from the CBD, the mouth of the river meets Port Phillip Bay creating a small beach for locals with good fishing, swimming and boating options.
